Our New Hens

Well, the work on the chicken coop is complete and all of the renovations to the chicken yard are finished!

My mom and I took Buddy with us to Flamig Farm to pick up the new pullets this morning. They are only ten minutes down the road, and the sun was shining for a change, making the ride there and back nice. We were going to go yesterday but it was pouring out, so we waited until today.

We picked out fifteen new Rhode Island Reds who are aprox. twenty weeks old and already laying. Boy are they nice looking hens! All of our Reds in the past have been dark red. This batch of birds are quite a bit lighter, with white feathers mingled in. Real good looking.

They also seem to be very laid back. Get it, "LAID" back. Much more so than the last batch we had. They took to their new home with what seemed to be a stress free trip. We let them enter from their holders on their own, hoping to keep things mellow. It worked! They should be laying sometime today, tommorrow at the latest.

Anyway, come check out the pics on facebook at weeks outdoors, or my home page at Shawn M. Weeks.

I will keep everyone updated, so keep checking in.

Until next time.
